Badminton is the name of a real-life village in England!
Its true! Badminton is really the name of a village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It consists of Great Badminton and Little Badminton. The village houses the Duke of Beaufort’s residence, Badminton House, which has been the principal seat of the Somerset family since the late 17th century. Badminton House also gives its name to the sport of Badminton.

Badminton is an ancient sport!
The origins of badminton probably lie in shuttlecock games played more than 2,000 years ago in Greece, China and India, but the UK the game was born in Gloucestershire in 1873 with the first official badminton club was established in 1877 in Bath.
The game was originally called ‘battledore and shuttlecock’. With Game of Thrones characters being just about the only people now able to pull off that sort of language, we can see why it changed to ‘badminton’.

The fastest badminton hit in competition by a male is 426 kph (264.70 mph), and was achieved by Mads Pieler Kolding (Denmark) in Bangalore, India, on 10 January 2017.
Mads Pieler Kolding achieved this record during a Badminton Premier League match playing for the Chennai Smashers.

After football, Badminton is the most popular sport in the world! It became an Olympic sport that was first played in 1992 at the Olympic games in Barcelona. More than 1.1 billion people tuned in to watch this competition on television.
