International Women’s Day 2022

#BreakTheBias

8th March 2022 - Celebrating International Women’s Day with our Play Badminton Club has become an integral ritual over last few years! It’s wonderful to see the support from members at the club, both men and women, of varying ages, professions and backgrounds.

It’s one of a few sports where both women and men can play together, usually in a mixed double’s game. Women have been part of our club from the very first day our club was formed and more recently as COVID restrictions were lifted, we’ve increased our numbers further. This is brilliant news and really encouraging to see the enthusiasm for the sport. We are keen to strive for a diverse and equal club and want to inspire more women to come and play badminton at a social, friendly, local club in Northwood and Pinner.

Some new female members started off by joining our recently launched women’s only session. These sessions are held on the first Tuesday of each month. Feedback has been very positive with echoes to continue and increase these sessions. In the sessions, women come to keep fit, rekindle with their passion for the game and make new friends with likeminded-individuals. Of course, the games are played to win like in all sessions, but with a little less ante and preconceived or biases about player abilities or performance. Some players have previously experienced these in other clubs during mixed double’s games.

This blog is to motivate us all to think about our biases. We all have them; men and women and at times they may not be obvious to us. So please be mindful in recognising and addressing biases to prevent any prejudices or unfairness taking place. We can all become allies for each other, rallying each other on and off the court; it’s not just for one day, let’s #BreakTheBias together!

Huge thank you to all the club players who took part in this year and supported International Women's Day 2022.
