Empowerment Day 2024

Sunday 21st April 2024

In the run up to Badminton England’s Disability Junior Championships 2024, an Empowerment Day was for the London & South East players. This was an opportunity for all participants likely to be going up to the Sheffield on 18th May 2024 for the championships to come together, get to know each other and practise some fun filled drills and games.

Starting with some hand-eye co-ordination drills using success balls and racquets the children were immediately seeing who can do the most taps by controlling the racquet and success balls using both forehand and backhand grips.

We moved on to going some fun activities in pairs and as a group too, playing ladder progressions and baseball drills. The children also engaged in some lively target practise to serve to progressively more distant targets.

After a short break, the children played some fun singles and doubles games, often challenging the coaches with excellent shots and serves.

Everyone did so well and showed great sporting manners and behaviour throughout the session. We are really looking forward to seeing the children at the Championships next month.

What is the Disability Junior Championships?

The event, to be held at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield on Saturday 18th May 2024, is for junior players aged 9-16 years with a physical disability, including wheelchair users. It is delivered with the support of the GB Para Badminton Squad & Coaches. This competition structure will help engage new disabled players, providing them with their first introduction to disability competition. This is event is part of Badminton England’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy, which includes increasing disability provision.
